TUTORIAL:

Make a slip knot and chain 4 to start.
Make a slip stitch into the first chain to form a loop.

(Beginners: If you have trouble seeing the loop because it's a bit small, then trying chaining 6 to make your loop.)

ROUND ONE:

Start with 4 chains.  (This counts as 1 tr and makes a corner space.)
Then, working into the loop, make 3 treble crochet stitches.
Make 2 chain stitches.
Make 3 treble stitches into the loop and then 2 more chains.
And again, make 3 treble crochets into the loop and 2 more chains.
To make the last side of the square, make 2 more treble crochets into the loop.
To complete the square and join the beginning and end of the round together, we'll need to make a slip stitch into the 3rd one of the chains we made at the beginning of the round.

(See where the pin is pointing in the picture)
Push your hook into the correct chain and make the slip stitch.
The first round is complete.

(If you are sticking with the same colour yarn, make a slip stitch into the corner space, so you're in the right place for the next round.)
ROUND TWO:

If you're changing colour, add the new colour into the corner space, next to where you just finished the last round.

Chain 4 to start this round.  (This counts as 1 tr and makes a corner space.)
Make 3 treble crochets into the same space.
Make 1 chain (This is our first side space)
Then make the first part of the corner by working 3 treble stitches into the corner space.
Chain 2  (This makes a corner space)
Then make the second part of the corner by working a further 3 trebles into the same corner space.

Make another side space by working 1 chain.
Then make a second corner by working 3 trebles, then making 2 chains and then another 3 trebles into the same place.  Then a side space, by making 1 chain.
Work the above instructions again to make the third corner.
To finish the last side, make 1 chain and then 2 trebles into the corner space where the round began.
To complete the round we need to make a slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the beginning chain of 3.

(Use the pin in the picture as a guide)
Round two is now completed.

Again, remember to slip stitch to the corner space to continue in the same colour.

ROUND THREE:

This is where the pattern for the future rows starts to emerge.

Start as before, with a chain of 4.
Then make 3 treble crochets into the same place (to form part of the corner, which we finish later)
Now to work along the sides, first chain 1
Then work 3 treble crochets into the 1 chain side space (side space) of the last round.  Then chain 1, now we're ready to make a corner
Work a corner (3 trebles, 2 chain, 3 trebles) into the corner space
And then work along the next side as before (1 chain, 3 trebles into the side space and then 1 chain)

Now you're ready to work another corner
Work the corner into the corner space as before
Then work along the next side (as instructed above) and make one more corner.  We've now reached the last side.
Work along the last side as before, 1 chain, 3 trebles into the side space, 1 chain
To complete the corner we started at the beginning of the round, make 2 trebles into the beginning corner space, then make a slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the starting chain of 4.
That completes round three.

Hopefully you can start to see what will happen with the next row.  You'll need to work a 'corner' into each corner space and then work a group of trebles into each of the side spaces.

ROUND FOUR:

Start by chaining 4 and making 3 trebles into the corner space.
Work along the first side of the square, by chaining 1, then making 3 trebles into the first space, chain 1 again.
Continue along by making 3 trebles into the next space, then chaining 1 again.
This bring us to the corner space, so make a corner as before (3tr, 2ch, 3tr)

Continue around the square, working the sides as shown and a corner into each corner space. Until the get back around to the beginning.
To finish the square, make 3 trebles into the starting space and a slip stitch to chain 3 of the starting chain of 4.

ROUND FIVE:

You can now work the next round in the same way:
-Start in the corner as already shown,
-Work along each side making 3 trebles in each side space and working with 1 chain in-between each treble group,
-Work a corner into each corner space
-End the round by completing the first corner as already shown.

That's all you need to know.

All the rounds now will be the same as given for Rounds Four and Five. You can follow the instructions above to make as many rounds as you like to the make the square the size you want.

Once you're confident, you can just use the written directions below as a reminder of what to do.
